MOUNT MORRIS — It was typical, physical Livingston County basketball in Mount Morris Friday night as visiting York scraped out a 57-50 win over the Blue Devils.
York (13-3) opened up a 17-10 lead after the first quarter only to see Mount Morris (7-8) cut the Golden Knights’ lead to just one, 27-26, at the half. It was back and forth for the final two quarters with three ties and nine lead changes over the final 16 minutes. York, who had been in the bonus the entire fourth quarter, struggled at the line but hit key free throws down the stretch to clinch the seven-point victory.
York head coach Ed Orman knew his team would be in for a difficult match up heading into Mount Morris.
“Mount Morris has some real talented scorers, and they’re a well coached team,” he said. "We knew coming in here this was going to be a one heck of a challenge, but the kids really stepped up.”
Junior forward Nick Curry paced York with 17 points and four rebounds, and senior Matt Graves added 12 points including three three-point buckets. Junior Luke Logsdon finished with nine points and 12 boards, and senior Dallas Comstock, who played huge for the Knights in the second half, scored eight points.
Orman praised Comstock’s versatility.
“Dallas has been one of our big men inside all year...tonight we wanted a little different match up,” he said. “We took Dallas - who probably hasn’t played much guard since JV - and we put him out there, and I think he did a tremendous job being unselfish and finding people”
Comstock applauded his coach’s confidence in him and his teammates.
“It’s always good to know your coach has trust in you to try something different,” he said “My teammates did a wonderful job getting open, and i just found them”
For Mount Morris, speedy guards Brad Ferraro and Dev Milford spearheaded pressure defense that lead to nine steals. Ferraro finished with a game-high 20 points and three steals and Milford added six points, four rebounds and two steals. The two guards were aided by forward Ben Chesnes, who finished with 11 points and 11 boards, and center Eli Todd, who scored four points and reeled in 13 rebounds.
The Blue Devils and Golden knights both return to the court next Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. with Mount Morris hosting Notre Dame-Batavia and York hosting Pavilion.
