Krifchin, Kosegi, and Tisia headline Lilac 10km
The Lilac festival is coming to a close this weekend, and as usual, it is captivated on its final day by the running of the annual Medved Lilac 10km. The Medved Lilac 10km is one of Rochester’s most historic road races, which attracts large crowds and elite runners. This year will be no different with pre-registration numbers soaring and one of the top up- and- coming female American distance runners entered in the field. “This year should be very exciting, and between the 2 events (5km and 10km) we should get close to 3000 runners” said race director Dan Medved.
The pre-race favorite on the women’s side comes from Maegan Krifchin of Syracuse, NY. “Krifchin ran the Lilac race last year and she’s a great runner and it’s great to see her come back” said Medved. Krifchin first burst on to the local running scene just after graduating from the University of Syracuse where she won the McMullen Mile, cruising to a 4:50.98. “I am excited for Lilac this year” Krifchin said. Last year Krifchin was edged out in the late stages of the Lilac 10km by Salome Kosegi to finish 2nd. “I’m looking for the win, to improve my time from last year’s race, and of course to have fun.” Krifchin, about a year ago joined Stotan Racing, which is an elite running group out of Syracuse, coached by John Aris. After joining Stotan Racing Krifchin has seen rapid improvements and has shot up the charts among being one of the top American distances runners. Last year, Krifchin was the top American and the 4th place finisher at the Utica Boilermaker 15km with a time of 52:24. She also ran the fastest 5km on the roads in western New York at the Bergen 5km running a 16:29, and then had an eye opening performance at the Philadelphia Half Marathon where she ran 1:11:04 in her first ever half marathon. “After my half marathon, we (my coach and I) were able to identify that this is a good distance for me and I also enjoy it.” Krifchin’s half marathon time qualified her for the 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials but she did not end up running in them do to an illness. “After I ran that half marathon we refocused my training for longer distance races” Krifchin said. “The half marathon that I ran was definitely a confidence booster for me, and gets me excited for future races.” Krifchin’s outstanding performance does not just top at the half marathon. On March 10, Krifchin finished third with a time of 50:43 in the Gate River 15km down in Jacksonville, Florida, which hosted the USA 15km National Championships. “The Gate River Run was a wonderful experience. It was a great atmosphere, great people and a great race. The race went well, it went out hard, but I just put myself in the race, and up with the leaders. I felt strong and smooth during the race” Krifchin added. With the Olympic Track and Field Trials coming up in late June, Krifchin in the next few weeks is looking to hit a qualifying standard for either the 5,000meter or the 10,000meter race. “My future goals simply, are to get stronger and faster; I want to try to hit some of the “A” standards times and just compete in competitive races such as the U.S. National Championships” Krifchin said.
The Men’s race has been dominated by African runners four out of the past five years, with the exception coming in 2010 from Jeffrey Eggleston a Rochester, NY native. Eggleston had a winning time of 30:09, which happens to be the fastest American time at the Lilac 10km since Chris Fox. Fox is the current head cross country coach at the University of Syracuse, and ran 29:07 at the Lilac 10km back in 1989. The trend of an African runner winning could continue again this year with two Kenyan runners entered in the race. Usually the African runners who enter the Lilac 10km come up from the New York City area, however; this year there is a bit of a twist with the two Kenyan runners. Kipglant Tisia and Peter Kosegi have local connections. Rochester was first introduced to Tisia back on April 29 when he surprised everyone by showing up and winning the Rochester Flower City Half Marathon. The following week Tisia introduced himself to Syracuse winning the Mount Goat 10mile on May 6. Tisia, a former Youngstown State runner who is temporarily living in Rochester might be making his home permanently in this area. Kisia recently joined Stotan Racing, the elite running group out of Syracuse, NY. “It’s going to be fun working with Tisia” Stotan’s Coach John Aris said. “This guy has some talent and I know he can become a 62-minute half marathoner if he wants to work for it.” Tisia who has not run very many 10kms said “Sunday at Lilac will be fun. I live near the course and know what to expect. I know it can be fast for the first four miles and there will be an uphill climb to the finish.” Tisia did run 30:20 and 30:15 during his Flower City Half Marathon and Mountain Goat 10mile victories, so the prediction that Tisia could break 30 minutes for the 10km race could come true.
Peter Kosegi, another Kenyan runner should also factor in contention for the Lilac title on Sunday. Kosegi, a nine time National Champion at Hamilton College, post-college running career, had a different fate than most exceptional college running stars. Kosegi was brutally beaten back in March of 2011 when he fell victim to a mugging while visiting friends and family in his native country of Kenya. “I never really think about the incident that much especially now that I am back on my feet.” After being left with two broken legs and a broken arm, Kosegi did not just want to able to walk again, but to continue his running career, especially after being robbed of his senior year. Kosegi’s hard work ethic does not stop with running, as he is enrolled in a PhD program at Binghamton University. “I started a PhD program in chemistry. I want to take advantage of every opportunity I get, so I want to finish what I started at Hamilton College” Kosegi stated. Kosegi, who added a time of 8:43.78 for the 3000 meter Steeplechase performance to his running resume, is new to the 10km distance. “This is my first competitive 10km. I don’t know what to expect. I want to brush shoulders with the big dogs out there by getting into some big races and get some experience.” Kosegi has come a long way and battled the odds, so whatever Kosegi runs on Sunday, he has displayed a heart of a champion. Kosegi’s outlook on life and running after the incident is: “I look at it this way- I tripped or lost a shoe in a big race, stumbled a little, but didn’t actually fall. I picked myself up and never looked back. I don’t want to waste time licking my wounds because there is something at the end worth going for.”
A dark horse that could be a factor in the race on Sunday is 2010 Johnny’s Runnnin’ Of The Green champion and Syracuse resident C Fred Joslyn. “Lilac is a great race, the course is beautiful and has a good balance of being a fast course, but still has some challenging sections to test yourself” Joslyn said. This will be Joslyn’s second time running the Lilac 10km; he finished 12th in 2010 with a time of 32:06. With Joslyn entered in the field, it adds to the historic list of accomplished runners that have run this race. Joslyn competed back in January in the Men’s USA Olympic Marathon Trials in Houston, Texas. “The Olympic Trials Marathon was an awesome experience. Being in an atmosphere with the best marathoners in the country was exciting. The intensity of the race was incredible. Overall, I did not run as well as I would have liked, but I learned a lot in that race and am excited to compete at that high level” Joslyn said. Other contenders for Sunday’s race include Rochester’s running hero Tim Chichester (the 11th place finisher at this year’s Boston Marathon) and Jared Burdick, an RIT graduate and a member of Stotan Racing. The race could also see some late fast additions. “We usually get last minute enquires from New York City residents, (African runners). Sometime those runners show up day-of and other times they don’t” said Dan Medved. African runners have come to the United States for years by running road races to make a living. In the grand scheme of things, Sunday’s Lilac 10km winning prize of $600 is a modest earning compared to some other races around the country. Some races have the funds to house and pay for athletes travel; at this time, the Lilac race does not have this commodity. Because of this, the last-minute enquires from New York City may try to earn an easier week’s paycheck elsewhere, rather than travel and compete in an already stacked race.
This year’s race will also feature a few Lilac 10km runner-up finishers from back in the day which includes Mike Melfi of Clay, New York, and Kevin Collins of Liverpool, New York. Melfi, now 35, finished second, ***running a personal best with a time of 30:33 to the 1984 Olympian John Tuttle twelve years ago. Kevin Collins is an accomplished marathoner and a 12th place finisher at the 2004 USA Olympic Marathon trials. He is a two time runner-up at the Lilac 10km. Collins finished a distanced second to Samuel Karanja in 2003, and was nipped at the line in 2005 by Tom Haxton. Collins, who now is 41 years old, should be in the hunt for the Medved Lilac Masters title along with Rochester’s Derrick Jones and Mark Andrews. Andrews will have a busy racing weekend, as he is also entered to compete in the USA Masters 8km National Championship in Williamsburg, Virginia on Saturday. For the last three years USATF Niagara Association 10km Championships has been held in conjunction with the Medved Lilac 10km. Once again the Medved Lilac 10km will have that honor in hosting the USATF Niagara Association 10km Championship, which will be putting up an additional $2900 prize purse. New to the USATF Niagara Association 10km Championships is a team competition. ** This added event contributes to why this historic Rochester race will be one of the most highly contested road races of the year in western New York. Runner Dave Coyne Tough as Nails

AVON — 74 marathons and counting for local running legend Dave Coyne, 60. But his latest, at Boston this past week, was his toughest of them all.
Coyne, who currently holds a streak of 23 consecutive Boston Marathons completed, nearly had his streak put to an and by a pulled calf muscle.
"This year's Boston Marathon was the toughest one of them all," said Coyne, who first attempted the marathon in 1969 while a student at Avon High School. " I normally prepare for a marathon with 900 training miles, but for this one, because of my pulled calf muscle, I was only able to log 120."
If you do the math, Coyne has logged 1,938 career marathon racing miles and over 65,000 training miles, so obviously the foundation was there. He finished this year's race at 4:41:01.
"I knew I was going to start this marathon despite the injury, and i knew I was going to finish it as well." said Coyne, who is in the Greater Rochester Track Club Hall of Fame. "I went into race with the mindset that no matter what, I wasn't going to fail."
Coyne has entered 41 Boston Marathons and finished 37 of them.
"I guess my body has been able to hold up over the years because of dumb luck. I'm just put together properly."
Coyne went through extensive physical therapy treatment, including some of the most brutal deep tissue massage treatments imaginable focused on his troublesome calf.
"I'm not done," Coyne said. "I still feel that when i get healthy i can clock a sub 3:15 marathon."

BERGEN — Linus Chumba, won the 20th Annual Jenny Kuzma Memorial Bergen 5k with a blazing time of 14:26.
According to Race Director Eric Boyce, Chumba rode up from New York City on a bus, and only had two hours of sleep.
On the women's side, Maegan Krifchin, a 2010 Syracuse Graduate, won the race and also set a new course record by running 16:29, three seconds off of her fastest 5k time ever. Krifchin was the 4th place finisher amid the 1st place American at the Utica Boilermaker 15k race which had over 11,000 runners.
This year's race saw the top 50 finishers running 17:12 or faster. The Bergen 5k is one of the most competitive 5k races in New York State and had 260 finishers on Saturday. Results, videos, and photos can be found at www.bergenroadrace.com.
Thanks to great bonus money Krifchin won $1,100 and Chumba won $600.

BOSTON — Local runner Tim Chichester, 23, had a break through 2012 Boston Marathon with a time of 2:21:10 placing 11th overall in the race loaded with olympic prospects.
The Mount Morris native has been crushing regional races and this one puts him on the an elite runner. He was the second fastest american on the day.
It was one of the slower Boston Marathon races in over a decade due to unusually warm heat but Chichester held strong as those in the lead pack fell away. Chichester dug deep with a second half split of 1:12 and change, his first half was 1:08:42. His pace per mile was 5:24.
Chichester currently lives in Brockport where he is a graduate student and runs in local races. He attended SUNY Geneseo where he ran track and Cross-Country.
This performance makes Chichester, who is 23 years of age, one of the top American born distance runners.

Kiwanis Club Baseball Tournament Celebrates 50 Years in Nunda

NUNDA — The smell of wet leather and the sound of aluminum bats filled the air in Nunda, NY as the Nunda Kiwanis Club was Celebrating its 50th Anniversary this week-end with their Annual Cal Ripken All Star Tournament. Between sprinkles of rain teams from Letchworth, Nunda, Pavilion, Perry and Warsaw enjoyed the cooler weather playing America’s sport, baseball.
“We struggled last night losing to Warsaw (3-9), but today we pulled together as a team,” said an excited Letchworth Coach Brad James said of Saturday’s game against Pavilion. An interesting dynamic of both the Cal Ripkin and the Little League system is that kids that ride the same school bus together, eat the same cafeteria food together and share the same English teacher… can end up playing on different teams.
Coach James had Noah Robinson, the teams #2 pitcher on the mound for 5 of 6 innings. While Robinson has a strong arm, his batting skills also helped lift his team to a 13-18 victory. Particularly in the 5th inning when Robinson [who asked Coach if he could bunt on his way to the plate] swung for the fences, ending up with a home run due to an error, and knocking in one additional run in the process.
Pavilion rallied late in the 5th inning scoring 4 runs after starting the inning out with a pair of outs. Robinson was moved to 1st base for the 5th inning due to a sprained wrist, but returned in the 6th to finish the game out.
“It was a solid team effort and something we can build on moving forward,” said Coach James.

Western New York Has Great Rodeo in Clarkson
- Details

CLARKSON — This past weekend was the 7th Annual Clarkson Rodeo and it is one of Western New York's best kept secrets. This rodeo is one of several in the Finger Lakes region with events in Dundee and Attica in July and August. If you have never been to a rodeo, it is a fun, family event that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
Family values and traditions are evident in the rodeo circuit. A number of participants I spoke with have family in the rodeo, some three generations deep. There are father, sons, grandsons, husbands, wives, kids and cousins all competing and participating.
"All have a passion for the sport and a need to compete," said Sam Swearingen, 51, owner of Rawhide Rodeo who is from Leicester, "Even in a down economy rodeos do okay because they are relatively cheap for a family to afford to attend."
Swearingen brings all of the stock, pens, and feed for an event. He travels all over the northeast as he has for the past 22 years. Swearingen is a two time world champion before doctors told him if he wanted to continue to walk, he should find another line of business.
"Running the shows is very rewarding, but has a lot more headaches than participating as a cowboy," said Swearingen.
Scott Parker, 43 of Honeoye is the class clown. He was a cowboy, and admits to more broken bones than he can count. Some of the broken bones were legs, every toe, and ankles and his back. He started out bull fighting in 1986 and then tuned to clowning in 1996 as it paid more. His jokes and demeanor is strikingly similar to Larry the Cable Guy. Parker jokes that Larry must have been sitting in the stands one day and stole his show. He too is second generation cowboy and plans on starting his six year old next year.

Kansas City “Maniac” to Finish Second 50 state Marathon Tour at Wineglass Marathon
- Details

CORNING – Whether for personal milestones or best records, the upstate-New York Wineglass marathon on Sunday attracts thousands from around the country – and world – to the nationally-respected race each fall. Among other accolades, the Wineglass Marathon is often credited for its fast finish times and unique features that continuously gain the attention of trade publications and web forums. Kansas City, Missouri resident Carol Goslin fits the mold perfectly.
As a member of the 50 States Club and Marathon Maniacs, Goslin represents a group of athletes who dedicate their lives to marathon running. Members of these clubs share a common goal: finishing a marathon in each state. For Goslin, the goal was only one step in a list of impressive accomplishments. After participating twice in the Senior Olympics, the 66-year old Goslin continued to finish 31 marathons in 365 days, placing her in the prestigious ‘titanium’ class of Maniacs. Upon completion of one nationwide circuit, Goslin forged ahead for a second tour, and decided to complete her second set of 50 at this October’s Wineglass Marathon. Goslin will be running alongside friend and fellow runner Elaine Bickel Green of Carmel, Indiana, who will also be finishing a 50-state tour at the race.
Goslin is the first to admit that the road to such notoriety has not been an easy one. After retiring, she was forced to go back to work and raise enough money for the second tour. Nevertheless, Goslin is convinced that it’s hard to put a price on the feeling accomplishment she has earned – twice. After completing more than 150 marathons to date, Goslin notes, “I’m so passionate about running that it goes beyond my personal goals. I love to help others on the course and enjoy traveling the country with other fanatics.”
Upon completion of this October’s Wineglass Marathon, Goslin plans to continue running. When asked about her next goal, she casually replies, “I’d like to reach 200 marathons total,” as if the feat was an easy accomplishment. Given Goslin’s dedication, passion and unwavering spirit to the sport, it certainly is.
Spectators at this year’s event are encouraged to cheer for Goslin, who will be easily spotted with her “Marathon Maniac” jersey and fans surrounding. As a tribute to her accomplishment, she will be wearing the #100 bib at the marathon.
Warsaw Athlete Sets New Girls Section V Pole Vault Record

CALEDONIA — There was a new Girls Varsity Pole Vaulting Section V Record set Friday at 12’ 3.5” thanks to the new sheriff in town, Warsaw Tigers Senior athlete Karman Auble.
“If I could do a back flip right now I would,” said an understandably excited Auble exclaimed after setting her new PR at 12’ and then establishing the new Section V record at 12’ 3.5”.
When the announcement was made over the PA system a resounding round of applause filled the air. As LCAA Pole Vaulting Champion and establishing this new Section V record, Auble could become the #1 seed for Sectionals if she isn’t already.
Dansville’s Phil Longo, [also a Senior athlete] captured the LCAA Boys Varsity High Jump Championship clearing the bar at 6” 2”. “I felt pretty good today, but there’s a lot more to go” says the “tied for” #1 seed for Sectionals. Longo also plays Football and competes in indoor track meets during the fall and winter months to keep in shape
Congratulations go out to the Letchworth Indian’s track team as they were chosen as the 2011 LCAA Sports Team of the year, and to both their Girls & Boys Varsity Coaches as they were likewise chosen Girls & Boys Coaches of the year.
Regional Marathon Runner Hopes to Qualify for Olympic Trials in the Weekend's Wineglass Marathon

CORNING — This weekend Bryan Morseman, an elite-regional athlete from Addison, hopes to fulfill his dream of qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials by running under 2:19 in the Wineglass Marathon this weekend.
A marathon celebrity in his own right, Morseman, 26, is widely known – not only in his home region, but across the nation – as one of the fastest young men in the country. In 2008, Morseman, in his first-ever marathon, scored a second-place finish at the Wineglass Marathon. Since then, he has competed in dozens of races across the country and in only a few years, his roster of accomplishments is astonishing. Morseman has competed in 5 marathons already this year and has boasted a finishing time of less than two and a half hours each time. His personal record, 02:20, was earned at the annual “Run for the Red” in the Poconos – a first- place finish that Morseman has defended for three consecutive years, winning in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
The most impressive statistic is that, outside of his one-time appearances at the New York City and Chicago marathons, Morseman has never finished a race outside the top 5. In his first and only appearance in the New York Marathon, Morseman made headlines with his 24th place finish in a field of more than 40,000 participants. In Chicago, a 46th place finish in a field of 38,000 once again placed him in the top one percent of finishers.
At this year’s Wineglass Marathon, Morseman is competing with one goal – to win. With his sights set on qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Team trials, Morseman must come in at 02:19, less than two minutes faster than his only other Wineglass appearance. While the Olympic team is clearly his highest goal, Morseman would also like to add a hometown win to his collection. “Winning the Wineglass Marathon would mean so much to me,” notes Morseman. “I’m looking forward to crossing that finish line surrounded by my family, friends and fans from the local area.”
With more than 110 miles of training each week, Morseman is quick to credit the support of his family, co-workers at World Kitchen, and fiancée Sarah – who rides alongside Morseman in each training and workout providing, water, energy gels and moral support - for his incredible success.
At the age of 26, it’s apparent that Morseman is on the cusp of a professional running career. With endorsements already from Spira® Footwear, Raw RevolutionTM energy bars and marathonguide.com, competitors across the country can tell from one look at his jersey that they’re going up against a true champion.
Mount Morris Loses Heartbreaker to Houghton in Section V Title Game

ROCHESTER— March madness and for Livingston County basketball has been maddening for our region as Mount Morris became the final victim thanks to an epic Houghton comeback downing the Blue Devils 54-53 in the Class DII title game.
Mount Morris was leading 49-43 with 1:48 left in the game, they had ball possession and the opposing teams star was on the sideline with an injury.
The series of events that followed would have J-Mac smiling as Houghton's Peter Wei came off the bench nailing a 3 pointer deep from the corner and then shortly after fellow pine mate Aaron Schue would pick up a loose ball after a scramble, nailing his own 3 pointer.
The game was back and forth the entire time, each team having their runs but neither did in the final 2 minutes in the first half as both teams combined for a total of 1 point.
Earlier in the week top seeded Livonia fell to Charlotte.
