BOYS BASKETBALL: Sectional preview - York grabs top spot in C3

LIVINGSTON COUNTY – It’s sectional time in boys’ basketball, and several Livingston County teams are vying for postseason dominance.

York was the only Livingston County team to earn a #1 seed in the 91st annual Section V Basketball Tournament, grabbing the top spot in the class C3 tournament. The Golden Knights (15-3) will host the winner of #8 Red Jacket (6-12) and #9 Harley Allendale Columbia (5-13) on Feb. 24 at 7:00 p.m. The C3 bracket is also home to #5 Geneseo (12-6). The Blue Devils will host #12 South Seneca (3-15) Feb. 21 at 7:00 p.m. With two wins by Geneseo and a win by York, the two teams could square off in a Feb. 27 semifinal slugfest.

In the class C1 bracket, #4 Avon (10-8) will host #5 Gananda (8-10) Feb. 24 at 7:00 p.m. A second-round win would likely pit the Braves against top seed East Rochester in the semifinals.

The class C2 tournament is loaded with powerful Livingston County squads, with #4 Perry (15-3) leading the way. The #5 seed Letchworth (15-3) will host #12 Canisteo-Greenwood (5-13) Feb. 21 at 7:00 p.m., and a victory for the Indians would set up a showdown with Perry. Elsewhere in class C2, #6 Caledonia-Mumford (9-9) will host #11 Marion (4-14), and #8 Pavilion (6-12) will host #9 Oakfield-Alabama (6-12). Both games will tip Feb. 21 at 7:00 p.m.

Livonia (8-10) earned the #5 seed in class B1, and the Bulldogs will travel to #4 Newark (10-8) Feb. 25 for a 7:00 p.m. matchup. On the same night in class B2, the #6 Dansville Mustangs (7-11) will visit #3 Hornell (12-5).

In class D1, #6 Mount Morris (8-10) will host #11 Romulus (4-14) Feb. 22 at 7:00 p.m.

Avon celebrates little league and community

AVON —  It's the only time the Yankees and Red Sox ever play nice, the Avon Little League opening day.

The League has over 200 boys and girls playing this year, which also includes a girls softball league.

"LIttle League is truly special to our community," said Richard Burke, "It brings parents, grandparents and the community all together in one place."

The games are played at the Avon driving park and culminate with a season ending playoff.

According to www.littleleague.org, youthful sluggers began playing baseball in the streets of New York City as early as the 1880s with pre-teen kids battling it out from different neighborhoods.

VIDEO: Warsaw Sinks Cal-Mum with Last Second Shot

CALEDONIA — The Cal-Mum Red Raiders hosted the Warsaw Tigers in a Section V midweek match-up that ended with Warsaw firing a 3-point buzzer beater to sink Cal-Mum 48-45.

With the score tied at 45-45 and 18.5 seconds left Warsaw Head Coach, Rob Stedman called his favorite play named after his son.

"We practice that play a lot," said Stedman. "We have to switch up it's name now because it is so well scouted."

The high double screen didn't go quite like it was scripted, but a wide open Hayden Newcomb, from Warsaw, took advantage of the screen and fired a 3-point bomb from the top of the arc.

"I was confident of the shot," said Newcomb. "People think because of my height that i can't shoot but i can. This win was a team effort though, we are like a family."

Newcomb led Warsaw with 21 points and Christian Hallett led Cal-Mum with 15. Cal-Mum was up 27-23 at the half.

BOYS BASKETBALL: East Rochester Defeats Avon in Class C1 semis

ROCHESTER – The #4 Avon Braves came into the Class C1 semifinal fresh off a 55-52 win over #5 Gananda, but Avon was no match for #1 East Rochester Monday night at RIT as the Bombers rolled the Braves 63-33. Avon struggled on the offensive end all night, and three players in double figures, lead by senior Nick Nadeau’s 16 points, propelled the Bombers (17-3) to the blowout win.

Seniors Malachy Coyne and Zack Pumputis lead the Braves (11-9) with six points each, and fellow senior Brandon Fuentes added five points, five rebounds and four assists in the losing effort. Senior Michael Campbell came off the bench in the final seconds to bury a three-point bucket for the Braves as well.

Avon head coach Rob Fries said East Rochester’s defense disrupted his team all night and prevented the Braves from finding a rhythm offensively.

“(East Rochester) are really quick – they’re just tough to simulate in practice,” Fries said. “We never really got any looks inside. We got stuck out on the perimeter, and we got further and further away from the basket. We did a better job in the second half, but by then it was a little too late.”

Despite the loss, Fries said he was proud of his team’s second-half effort and their strong 2011-2012 season.

“They’re a great group of kids, they play hard, and I thought we got better as the year went along, he said. “We came out and played every game, and we did a lot of things to try to be competitive – some worked and some didn’t. Tonight just didn’t work for us.”

East Rochester will face #3 Pembroke (14-6) in the Class C1 final March 2 at 9 p.m. in Rochester’s Blue Cross Arena.

Wet Spring Crushing Sports Season

LIVONIA — The Bulldogs Annual Invitational Track Meet ended almost as soon as it began on Friday May 13th after thunder was heard less than an hour into the meet.

Many of the top student athletes in Section V were invited to this event including competitors from Avon, Cal-Mum, Perry, Warsaw, Dansville, Lima Christian, Letchworth and York making the trip into Bulldog Country.

After waiting out the mandatory 30 minute wait after thunder was heard or lightening seen… the rains, wind and looming thunderstorms arrived on cue forcing the cancellation of this event. An announcement of a possible make up date is likely to follow sometime this week.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Avon edges Dansville 53-48

DANSVILLE – The Avon Braves traveled to Dansville for a sectional tune up against the Mustangs and came away with a 53-48 victory.

Avon(9-8) took a 41-28 lead into the fourth quarter, but Dansville (6-11) came out hot in the final period to add some drama to the game before Avon retook control in the closing seconds.

Senior Brandon Fuentes led the way for the Braves with 13 points and five rebounds. Junior Tyler Hite scored 11 points and pulled down 7 rebounds, junior Zach Mouw finished with 10 points and five rebounds and senior Zack Pumputis added 10 points to round out Avon’s quartet of double-digit scorers.

Avon head coach Rob Fries said turnovers and foul trouble contributed to his team’s shaky fourth quarter, but he looked forward to building toward sectionals.

“I don’t think we’re the best team in Section V, but I think we can play with anybody on any night,” Fries said. “We’ve been able to play with teams for about 27 minutes a game, and we need to just cut down on some of the mistakes we made late in the game (tonight).”

For the Mustangs, seniors Mitch Lamerson and Geoff VanDunk both collected double-doubles, with Lamerson finishing with a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds and VanDunk scoring 11 points and corralling 11 boards.

Avon will host Caledonia-Mumford Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in their regular-season finale. Dansville will also play a final home game Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., as they host the Livonia Bulldogs.
