LIVINGSTON COUNTY — On Monday night officials from Geneseo, Livonia, Conesus, Groveland, Conesus Lake Authority and the Livingston County Planning Department met to discuss the Conesus Lake Water Shed Plan.
Soon, phase I will begin which will include engineering services for the development of construction plans specifications and construction in each stream reach in accordance with those engineered plans and specifications.
There are five streams leading into the lake that need to be reinforced to prevent erosion, and access to the streams is tricky.
"There are 20-25 landowners that surround the streams involved, we are hoping they all buy-in to the program so crews can have access," said Livingston County Planning Department Planner Heather Ferrero, "This work will help protect these landowners as well, and the work isn't being done at any additional cost."
The work will be funded by matching state grants and the town of Livonia in cooperation with the town of Geneseo and Livingston County has received a $724,228 grant to remediate sections of two streams feeding Conesus Lake, pending the work is completed by August 31, 2013.
The required 50 percent match in funds will come by Town Highway Departments that will be providing the labor and equipment towards the construction work on the streams.
"The DEC is looking at more natural ways of reinforcing stream banks," said Ferraro, "The voluntary easement by the landowners for workers to have access to the stream banks is integral to the projects success."
In 2002 Conesus lake was included on New York State's 303(d) list which is an inventory of lakes streams and coastal areas where water quality conditions are not adequate to support a designated use. Sediment and nutrients (phosphorus) are cited as the major cause of the problem, most of which comes from water run off from the stream banks.
