CALEDONIA — The New York State Department of Conservation is cutting down 28 ash trees in an effort to fight the Emerald Ash Borer taking over the region and decimating the regional ash tree population.
The grove of ash trees on Sand Hill Rd., some nearly 80 feet high, are being knocked down in an effort to funnel the Emerald Ash borer into a controlled area and then kill the insect.
"We are working hard to try and stay ahead of them," said Josh Payette a Senior Forest Health Technician for the DEC, "We got to this one early so the damage is quite light."
Payette and a team are using a technique called phloem girdling where they pull away the bark of a tree, lure in the beetle to attack and then kill the infested tree and bug before the Emerald Ash Borer can spread.
According to Angela Ellis from the Livingston County Planning Department those who own Ash trees and are interested in learning more about the Emerald Ash Borer can attend a free workshop at Long Point Park on June 4th at 10 am.
