Caledonia Post Office Not a Done Deal

CALEDONIA — The shut down Post Office is not a done deal according to the Town Supervisor and Post Office officials.

Caledonia Town Supervisor Dan Pangrazio and Mayor Joe Caluorie are still fighting, and making progress on getting the post office back for residents.

The landlords for the Post Office, Birdgewater Investment Corp, have offered to rent the space back to them for less then the previous fee. The Post Office was paying $29,316 per year - $10.50 per square foot, now Bridgewater has notified the Post Office that they,  "We will accept even less than they have been paying should they simply be reasonable and make us a fair offer."

According to Caledonia Supervisor Dan Pangrazio part of the issue is that residents have no one on the federal level too turn to because of the seat vacated by Chris Lee, "The sad part is that we have lost our congressman so we have nobody fighting for us."

The Post Office is now vacant and residents bounce between Mumford and Scottsville for packages and certified letters.

"The Post Office is still being considered, and what happens will really depend on public outcry in keeping it," Pangrazio said.

The Post Office was closed when lease renewal negotiations fell through, now the Post Office is looking at better ways to be more financially sustainable in the region with 10 locations near Caledonia as alternatives according to Karen Mazurkieicz Spokesperson for the Western New York Postal Service.

"Emergency suspension was used as a closing but its not permanent, we are looking at our options," said Mazurkiewicz, "The questionaire's we sent out are incredibly important in our decision making process and we have already received several hundred of them."

Mazurkiewicz also stated that there will not be a change in zip code and that due to an increase of people paying bills and taxes online it has changed the need for local Post Office's.

"The question is can we adequately serve the community with the resources there?" said Mazurkiewcz.
