Avon Class of 2012 graduates 80 students

AVON — The Avon senior class of 2012 will walk the grounds of their school for the final time as students, Saturday,  before they receive their diplomas at the schools 116 commencement ceremony.

The Avon Class of 2012 contains 80 candidates for graduation, with 87 percent of those candidates pursuing immediate post-secondary education. Six percent of the class plan to join the military, while seven percent plan to seek employment. Seven members of the class have also completed programs at the Genesee Valley BOCES Vocational Center.

The ceremony will kick off at 11:00am, beginning with a prelude by the Avon Senior Concert Band. Salutatorian Vincent Crane will address the audience following a welcome from High School Principal Barbara Zelazny.

Crane will also receive several awards and scholarships at the ceremony, including the Elton J. Burgett Scholarship, the John Smith Jr. Memorial Award, and was a participant in Boys State.

The guest speaker for the class will be English teacher Jeff Kennel, after which, Valedictorian Shannon McKeown will give her address to the class and audience. McKeown is also the recipient of several awards, including the Bank of Castile Math Award, the Chuck McFadden Student Service Award, the Livingston County Chamber of Commerce Award, and the Wegmans Scholarship.
