AVON — Avon Town Judge Michael Torregiano, who previously lobbied for a raise, got his wish thanks to the new members of the Avon Town Board, but it's unclear on whether he had the complete blessing of speaking on behalf of Judge Pete Piampiano.
In the January's previous board meeting Judge Torregiano came to the Town Board where he was speaking on behalf of his colleague Judge Piampiano, but according to Town Council Member Tom Mairs the other judge did not want a raise and offered to return one if he was given one.
"After talking with Judge Pete Piampiano he told us he didn't want a raise," said Councilman Mairs, who stated that he along with Council member Dick Steen took the time to speak directly with Judge Piampiano.
The solution to the situation was placed before the board by Councilman Dick Steen - bring the salary of Judge Michael Torregiano to that equal of Judge Piampiano which is $11,783 a year which would be around a $500 raise. The motion was forced into a vote after it was seconded by Town Councilman Bob Ayers.
Town Council member Jim Blye stated prior to the vote that he was disappointed with the clerk's office being over budget by $2,800 and a lack of communication with the office in general. He was the only Town board member that would vote against the raise as it carried in a 4-1 vote.
Avon Town Supervisor David Lefeber reinforced Town Councilman Blye's frustration with the clerk's office, "There are definitely issues that need to resolved with the clerk's office."
The raise is retroactive for the fiscal year 2012.
The Avon Town Board collectively agreed that the issues could be resolved after a meeting with the department and that all could move forward.
