Avon Million Dollar Mile Greenway Trail Extension to be Completed in Oct 2013

AVON — The Genesee Vally Greenway Trail is quietly becoming a signature tourist attraction for the region, and the Erie-Attica Bridge and Trail Project will connect the outdoor walkway with the Village of Avon.

A design team from Fisher Associates presented the project to the community at Monday's Village Board meeting where architecture renderings where released as well as cost figures.

The actual construction on the project will start in October of this year and take a year to complete.  The total cost of the project is estimated at $962,000 the total distance of the trail extension is 5,600 feet, just over a mile.

The costliest segment of the trail is the Truss Bridge over the Genesee River. Currently the iron frame consists of rotted out railroad ties. The proposed bridge would have a ten or eleven foot wide timber deck that sits inside the iron frame. The bridge alone will cost $450,000.

The project will be financed by a New York State Department of Transportation grant that will cover 80 percent of the project. The Village will cover 20 percent of the project and has already allocated $60,000 in it's budget.

Currently the trail is used by pedestrians, bicycles, horses, cross country skiers, and hikers.

Officials have repeatedly stated that the trail will be a boost for local businesses and as well provide a safe connection for Village residents to the treasured Greenway.
