Avon – Physicality was the name of the game Friday night in Avon as the home team took down Letchworth 54-46 in Livingston county action.
Avon(6-4) found out why Letchworth(9-2) has had so much success so far this season as they met head on in a physical match that was full of defense.
Both teams fought down low throughout the entire match as both teams were in the bonus at some point with each team sending the other to the line more than 20 times.
Avon gained crucial momentum with the disruptive ability of their athletic senior guard Brandon Fuentes who led all players with 8 steals to go along with a game high 27 points and 4 rebounds. Junior forward Tyler Hite also chipped into the defensive effort with 9 rebounds and 4 blocks.
When asked how he thought his team performed, Fuentes replied “We started out well but we knew we had to get in their face” and how his team came out so strong in the second half, which included his own 12 point outburst, “We needed to keep pounding on the offensive boards and getting second chance opportunities”.
Avon’s head coach Rob Fries, who also said that they had been “working on rebounding all week” in preparation for a physical Letchworth squad, commented on the team victory, “We’re rounding together at the right time, so we’ll see how we go down the stretch”.
Letchworth was led by their 6’5” senior Ryan Owens who scored 21 along with having a game high 9 boards. Junior Jake Remington was second on the team in scoring with 11.
Both teams play again Tuesday January 24th, with Avon going to Livonia and Letchworth at home against Attica.
